Indexing means reading the documents in your folders ahead of time. After the first run, only changed files are read again, automatically. Files changed or deleted while the app was off are checked the next time it starts.
Add a folder
- Open Indexing in the sidebar.
- Select "Add folder" and pick a work folder.
- Indexing starts right away. Progress shows on the same screen.
- Picking a whole drive (for example
D:\) shows a warning. With many files the first run can take hours, so we recommend adding work folders instead. - Original files are only read.
- If a folder briefly disappears, as with a USB or network drive, the index is not deleted. Checking resumes when it's back.
Formats
| Format | What is read | Plan |

Exclude folders and formats
- Remove an added folder: select "Exclude" on the folder's row in Indexing.
- Exclude only a subfolder: add paths, separated by commas, to Settings › Indexing › "Excluded folders", then select "Save".
- On the same screen you can set excluded extensions, the maximum file size and indexing sensitivity (loose / normal / strict).
- Temporary lock files that Office creates while a document is open (names starting with
~$) are excluded automatically.
Control indexing speed
Choose under Indexing › "Performance mode".
| Mode | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Power saver | Working on battery |
| Balanced (default) | Everyday use |
| Fast | To finish the first run quickly |
| Mad Max | As fast as possible while you're away from the PC |
In Settings › Indexing › "Resource protection" you can also pause on battery or limit indexing during work hours.
Re-index
- In Folders, right-click a folder and select "Re-index".
- "Re-index changes" reads only changed files; "Re-index from scratch" reads the whole folder again.
To check status and fix failed documents, see Index status and failed documents.
