Getting started

Install and first run

Install from the Microsoft Store, follow the first-run steps, pick a folder, and start searching.

What you need

  • A 64-bit PC with Windows 10 (1903 or later) or Windows 11
  • Install from the Microsoft Store. Search for "ASTERON KMS" in the Store, or use the Microsoft Store button on the KMS page.

First run

  1. The first time you open the app, "Preparing core services…" appears briefly.
  2. Swipe through the four intro screens and select "Get started".
  3. Choose your language and accept the terms.
  4. Sign-in screen
    • To use it without an account, select "Continue without signing in". You start on Lite.
    • To create an account, select "Don't have an account? Sign up". Enter the code sent to your email and set a name and password. New accounts start on Lite.
  5. Choose your role, interests and which kinds of files to search. You can "Skip" any of these.
  6. Under "Choose folders to index", pick your work folders and select "Start". Indexing begins.

Each screen shows a short guide the first time you open it. Select the [i] button on a screen to see it again.

Sign in later

  • Select "Sign in" at the bottom of the sidebar, or
  • Sign in from Settings › License.

You need to sign in to use Standard or Pro, and to use the quick search window (Alt+Space).

Good to know

  • Closing the window doesn't quit the app. It stays in the system tray and keeps indexing. To quit, right-click the tray icon and choose "Quit".
  • Start with Windows is off by default. Turn it on in Settings › General › Startup.
  • Where data lives: the index and settings are stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%\ASTERON\KMS. This folder stays if you uninstall the app.
  • Your original files are only read. They are never moved, changed or deleted.

Next: Add folders and index
